This extremely rare Colombianite, traditionally known as Piedra de Rayo ("Stone of Lightning"), is an extra-large approximately 30-million-year-old piece of ancient volcanic obsidian glass from Colombia. Comparable in size and feel to a medium-to-large palm stone, this substantial natural piece has an irregular elongated form with an incredible variety of surface features—including large rounded craters, deep grooves, dimples, curved etchings, worm-like markings and a distinctive fan-shaped area of natural striations. Broad smoother areas have an attractive natural glassy sheen that shifts as the piece is moved beneath the light. Strong illumination from behind completely transforms the normally dark glass, revealing remarkable smoky clear to whitish clear translucency and bringing an extraordinary amount of fine surface detail into view.
