This extremely rare Colombianite, traditionally known as Piedra de Rayo ("Stone of Lightning"), falls between a large and extra-large size and is an approximately 30-million-year-old form of ancient volcanic obsidian glass from Colombia. This substantial natural piece has an irregular sculptural form combining broad smooth areas with heavily etched sections, natural dimples, worm-like markings, grooves and several distinctive crescent- or smile-shaped impressions. Much of the surface has a naturally smooth sheen with extremely fine micro-dimpling visible under direct light. Several naturally flat(ish) sides allow the piece to stand upright in multiple positions. Its most dramatic transformation occurs when illuminated from behind—the normally dark, nearly black glass becomes remarkably translucent, ranging from smoky to almost completely clear depending on the angle and intensity of the light.
