This extremely rare true medium-size raw Colombianite, traditionally known as Piedra de Rayo ("Stone of Lightning"), is a fascinating pseudo-tektite and approximately 30-million-year-old form of ancient volcanic obsidian glass from Colombia. This naturally irregular oval-shaped piece has a dark gray to nearly black surface with numerous dimples, depressions, and especially prominent wormhole-like etchings that closely resemble those found on black tektites. Several of the deeper depressions contain small areas of natural tan material, adding contrast to the dark surface. Unlike true tektites, Colombianite is volcanic in origin, and when strongly illuminated from behind, this otherwise dark piece transforms into a glowing translucent whitish-clear natural glass, revealing several tiny internal inclusions.
