You will receive the exact Pietersite gemstone sphere shown in the photos. This medium-large 53.7mm sphere weighs approximately 217.9 grams / 7.69 oz (just under 1/2 lb) and displays strong blue, red, gold, and bronze chatoyancy with dramatic swirling movement throughout the stone.
This piece is a wonderful example of how Pietersite earned its nickname in the first place. Pietersite is often referred to as the “Tempest Stone” because of its chaotic fibrous patterns and storm-like flashes that seem to shift constantly depending on lighting and viewing angle. No two pieces ever seem to move light exactly the same way, which is part of what makes this material so fascinating to collectors—and one of my own personal favorite minerals.
Good Pietersite with stronger blue flash and active chatoyancy has become increasingly difficult to source consistently over the years, especially in higher quality polished spheres like this one. True commercial Pietersite is primarily mined in Namibia and China. Based on appearance and material quality, this sphere is most likely Namibian material, though exact mine origin cannot be guaranteed without laboratory testing.
This is a genuine natural Pietersite sphere that has been shaped and polished to highlight its best characteristics and its amazing Tiger’s Eye-like light-play effect, also sometimes referred to as the “Cat’s Eye” effect.
I do my best to photograph and video each piece as accurately as possible so the colors and appearance closely match what I see in person.
